Forget Jogging,

  • Stretching and Relaxing

Improved flexibility is one of the benefits of Yoga, but I would say flexibility is a kind of sub-benefit of something more important – Relaxation.

Stretching is a part of Yoga postures.  Stretching with careful attention to the experience is a way to learn to be a better 'Relaxer'.  Relaxation is good for you in many ways – not the least of which it simply feels nice.  Try entertaining the idea that gaining flexibility is a positive side effect of learning to be a better Relaxer via stretching.

Regular relaxation practice can make you feel like you have more energy & better overall moods because you (hopefully) reduce the amount of time you spend in a stressed state.  Under stress, the body diverts resources away from digestion, immune function, & higher mental functioning. Muscle tension & blood pressure are raised, which might help in some situations (eg fight or flight).  However this stress response is not helpful in some of our modern day frustrating situations – such as being stuck in traffic.

Learning to become a better Relaxer through Yoga. Relaxation feels good and gives your body more time to get on with the processes which the stress response interrupts: digestion, immune function, calm thought.
