Sydney is one of the most beautiful (and liveable) cities in the world and there’s no better way to enjoy it’s natural beauty than by getting active outdoors. Here are five great exercise options to try this summer.
1. Hit the road
Running has plenty of health benefits – it’s good for your heart, helps to strengthen your muscles and can aid weight control. And because it’s a high-impact weightbearing exercise, it’s good for your bones too. Along with being a great cardio workout, running is also an excellent way to explore the city. If you’re new to the sport, consider joining a beginner’s programme and invest in a good pair of running shoes.
Run this route: Go for an early morning run from Bondi to Bronte (about 5km return) or to Coogee (12km return) if you want a longer route. Definitely one of our favourites!
2. Take a hike
Hiking the many trails around Sydney will get your heart pumping, help to strengthen your hips, glutes, knees and ankles, and will even give your core a bit of a workout – all while you get to enjoy spectacular views. It’s the perfect way to destress, unwind and reconnect with nature.
Try this trail: The beautiful Blue Mountains are practically on our doorstep – if you haven’t explored this area yet, why not try the popular 6.3km Grand Canyon Track which starts at Evans Lookout (Blackheath).
3. Dive right in
Swimming is a fantastic full-body workout that uses your arms, legs, core and more. And while it’s guaranteed to get your heart rate up, it’s a low-impact exercise which means that it’s gentle on your joints – a great option for people who want to avoid injury or who are recovering from an injury.
Swim these spots: Practise your strokes at the North Sydney Olympic Pool, Prince Alfred Park Pool or Bondi Icebergs Pool. Or head out to the Manly Dam in Manly Vale, where you can picnic, swim, kayak and water ski.
4. Get on your bike
Whether you choose to explore mountain bike trails or cycle routes in the city, you’ll reap the benefits of this low-impact cardiovascular exercise – which include increased muscle strength, improved heart health and better weight control. If you’re just starting out, consider joining a cycle club – it’s a great social activity.
Explore these tracks: Take your bike for a spin on the Centennial Parklands Cycleways, the 23km Cooks River Cycleway or the 32km A Grand Tour of Sydney’s East.
5. Surf’s up!
As we’re spoiled with an abundance of beautiful beaches in Sydney, no guide to outdoor activities would be complete without surfing. Along with being a whole lot of fun, surfing is an excellent stress reliever and a good cardio workout. Plus, thanks to all the paddling and balancing, it also builds muscle strength and helps you develop a strong core.
Catch some waves: If you’re a newbie and keen to take lessons, look no further than Bondi – it’s got something for everyone. Nearby Maroubra is a good choice if you’re already comfortable on a board.
